NYCC 2011

This year at the NYC Javits Center (see above) the annual NYC Comic Con was held. The comic convention is a 4 day event that is touted as the East Coast’s biggest comic con, its only rival being San Diego’s comic con. This year for the first time I believe, every day SOLD OUT!  Luckily, I bought my Saturday ticket a couple months ago because I attended last year and could only make Sunday when it was at a close. (wah wah) Now, why would I go to a comic con?? Well lots of reasons, mostly because I appreciate the art aspect of it and I like dressing up, not to mention a favorite past time and bonding with my Father was: Godzilla, Star Wars, (SOME) Star Trek, Comics, and sci-fi in general… so its also a part of my history that I hold dear and someone that is dear to me. Awwww…

First things first.. ONI PRESS !

Now last year I went lone wolf to this, BUT, this year, I had an accomplice… Lets just call her Mademoiselle M. I mean.. who took this picture?!? ahaha.. Oni Press is near and dear because they published one of my favorite comics that described my life in High School very nearly perfect with Chynna Clugston Major’s Blue Monday..after which I followed her other creations and endeavors with Hopeless Savages and Scooter Girl. Ya.. I like her. Now between M and I we had a short to do list of people/artists we wanted to see, so once we did that.. we wandered happily from one discovery to the next. We ran into Zombies, Transformers, Lego Men, Johnny Cupcakes, Vampires, Video Games,”Free Tours of the Universe.” and many wonderful artists in many different mediums. One lovely girl was even making her own updated versions of Alphonse Mucha’s work !!

There was so much wonderful artwork all so different from the next, I could post 100 pictures but there is a small sampling for you with links provided to the artists websites. I tend to take a special interest in Pin ups, subversive and dreamy images… so I gravitate towards the bizarre takes on classics and overall bad ass. pop art, bright.. etc etc art. There was something for all tastes. Now, moving on.. Comic con is perhaps more widely known for those “weirdos that dress up.” … Well.. yes.. but its quite fun and besides the convention attendees dressing up many of the various vendors have their own mascots or characters mulling about. I myself, having time in advance to actually consider it, took the simple route… subtle.. vampire..

I paled myself out and put in contacts that made my eyes gold flecked/more caramel.. which you can’t tell here because I have dark eyes they didn’t turn up in the photographs. Anyway I also am wearing a Cullen Crest because.. yes.. its a Twilight necklace.. I considered even brushing my face with translucent glitter so I would “sparkle” but decided against it. Overall I was aiming for Alice Cullen…

What sold me on it was mostly the fact that I could wear my own clothes and spend about $20… done and done. However I had to take the contacts out eventually because they were seriously uncomfortable and clouding my vision a bit. Awesome. Sooooo.. ya.. Let’s take a stroll shall we?

This was not a stationary object.. there is actually a person inside !

We also came across a table that had a wicked zombie meandering around and we were told that, apparently you can go to some camp for a few days and literally live action role play a Zombie Apocalypse !?!? Ya, that sure beats summer camp. If I ever have children I’m sending them to this “camp” and they will probably grow up severely damaged from the experience. (kidding) All I know is that I want to do it and so does Miss M, whom is my adventurous lady friend I can geek out with. In November we will be attending the Quidditch World Cup (I’m not kidding) in Manhattan with our Gryffindor scarves and complimentary hot chocolate. Keep an eye out for that…In the meantime here are some of the goodies I carted off from NYCC 2011 !

No that is not a condom, that is an emergency monocle.. in what appears to be a mock condom wrapper.. ahahha. I am never opening it, its too awesome. I shall keep it as is in all its glory forevermore… I could keep writing but I shall not bore you with any more details, I’m sure you get the gist.. and if your ever in New York City.. come to Comic Con!!

Oh ya….The book is always better but…

Everyone needs a Dumbledore.

READ THIS.

Above is an absolute treasure of a speech, check it out. Also concerning the fictional wizard, he represents something in which every person should have in their lives.. someone looking out who is wise and kind and calming. I hope you have one.

Xo.

Fish Guts

So yes, I tend to spill my guts a lot, in a nice big messy pile on display for bystanders to see. Why? Am I an exhibitionist? Am I a masochist? Do I enjoy committing social suicide? I am unsure. Am I too honest and open? yes, probably. While I don’t see it as a negative, one must be cautious. It seems there are many sides to the die, as Weezer attests to (12 sides and more!) and in relation to people you may not like or expect every side. I have learned not to trust so easily (unfortunate) because people are not very nice after all… I have learned a lot so far in my 27 years and mostly how important it is to guard your heart. People will rip it to shreds given the chance. I am weary of this, I am down trodden and tired of experiencing this in myself and observing it happening to others. How and why do people become so.. I’m not even sure one word can sum it up.. Selfish? Cruel? Immature? Self Centered? Judgmental? Pretentious? For me this is the ugly underbelly of human nature, sure I believe people are good to a point, but I meet, like each of you have, people from time to time that test this belief. I also realize that it seems all of humanity is lurching and groping for some sort of connection, answers, LOVE. When Lennon and McCartney penned the lyric “All you need is love” they were quite right. Its simple, its true. However we have made a mess of love. It seems to me I see a lot of empty souls wandering these streets and some of them have hurt me but I know, I know, I only feel sorry-for them and secondly for me.. because Ladies and Gentleman we are in a sad state. You are much more valuable than you can imagine. If you’ve ever been in an atmosphere of turmoil and then been lucky enough to experience one of harmony/caring/kindness then you know the difference. If not, I’m sorry, your one of the many who needs to experience a revolution. One in thinking, in atmosphere. People are lonely; dissatisfied. Why? What’s filling your void? We’ve all got one and at least for me I know what fills it. Love. This can come in many forms. Don’t buy what the world is selling. Find your worth, it will change your life. Don’t give up even if people seem to keep pushing you down, after all, the night is darkest before the dawn. (and yes I stole that from The Dark Knight)

Now please, try and treat each other better.

Wax Attax

So when I first moved to the apple I discovered not only seamlessweb (you’ll never cook again, I swear) I also found livingsocial. Both are websites you order things from, one food, the other, services. Luckily I bulked up a little cart of things that you can use within a certain time frame (a year, 6 mos, etc) and now that I’m being even thriftier.. I may be on the budget of a pauper but I still live like a prince (in my mind ahaha). Today I used a couple of my vouchers/coupons to visit Saloni Threading Salon. I got a 30-minute facial, eyebrow threading, and a bikini wax.( by the by, what DO you tip someone who does bikini waxing?? I mean I don’t even like to touch feet really) It turns out this spa is one little cozy room with two private rooms for facials and waxing, they have been there 7 years! I enjoyed it and it was steeply discounted so no complaints. I included my journey along the way…

Saloni

When I first got off the subway into Union Square I nearly forgot, there is a HUGE farmers market! They do it weekly in the summer and fall, weather permitting. I love Union Square, there is a lot to do and see there. I ended up talking to a vendor about the Market and her products, Sheep’s milk cheeses, yogurt (yes you read it correctly) and meats. As it turns out sheep’s milk contains much more nutrients than goat’s milk OR cow’s milk! I was given samples to try and lets just say, I found a new favorite dairy animal. I bought lavender & honey cheese and some yogurt. The flavor of Sheep’s milk is mild and smooth( see also: delicious) I was not prepared to do any heavy shopping but I will be back. I mean, really, fresh beautiful local produce and products being sold street side right in Manhattan !? I love this city.

(Pssssst.. Link up here—-> Food Me!

I realize I seem to be taking a lot of carrot pictures, they are just so…. perfect looking! I like the color contrast. After the Market I wandered to… *drum roll* FORBIDDEN PLANET! Dun dun dun duuuun

Afterwards I hopped over to Max Brenners.. this place I have walked by several times but never went in because it looks expensive and well.. it is.. I got something called a Golden Latte (various yummy juices) and a Nutella Crepe and it came to about $16.50.. yikes. I must say its a bit too sugary for me and I have had much better crepes in Astoria. So it was not worth the price, however the atmosphere is amazing and the products are creative.. Chocolate syringe anyone?

I’d recommend a visit, mostly because the sheer sight of it all and the shop is lovely even though my crepe was so so. I will be returning to buy some chocolate goodies one day I’m sure.. (they have a store inside the eatery aka “chocolate bar”)

After these places I went to Saloni and it was a much needed break. I had just worked an overnight shift and have been working a lot in general so it was nice that I had saved those vouchers from so long ago to use now! Of course afterwards I stumbled out into the bright street from the dim calm of Saloni and made one last stop at one of my favorite stores: Callalilai Union Square

It is a hit or miss store, even if you miss there is always something however, they have amazing bags on hand as well as belts at all times. Most if not all the shoes are tenderly made by the best, IN ITALY. They actually look like vintage shoes made in america by the way they are stamped and how the leather is sewn, however they are not, these shoes are newly made in Italy, where they still know how to make a good pair of shoes. They look vintage only because ours stopped looking that way because we manufacture/accept crap now! Today in particular was a big HIT, if I had reverted to my old ways I would have dropped at least a few hundred on some amazing pieces but instead I purchased one item, on sale. A unique dress that the lovely ladies here even steamed for me before they wrapped it up (they are quite helpful here) Needless to say in N.y. you don’t necessarily have to have money to enjoy the fancy things in life.  I felt very pampered today and boy did I need it ! Check out the shops blog and of course check out the shop if your ever in town ! The one in Union Square is in a beautiful antique shop, the atmosphere alone is wonderful. I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Back to work for me tomorrow, I have financial goals people. ha.

Ps… On my way home I stopped to browse at SITE, a great local store, I plan to do more extensive coverage of them in my community portion, until then check out the webSITE.

Enjoy.

How it all Ve-gan.

Today I went out to eat with a lovely lady after work to an Upper East Side restaurant called Franchia. Its touted as a Vegan Cafe and it certainly is tasty and presented very well. Also much to many a persons surprise, I’m sure, very affordable, no sticker shock here. Both of us chose to get the Tea Party (I think it was called that) Tray which included a tea at the beginning and end (a whole pot, you choose the teas) an array of small plates and two mini desserts (I was given a red bean mochi and a mango creamy sherbet drizzled with rasberry sauce!) Here are some delicious photos. Note* I always take food pictures, I appreciate what I eat (=

This place had a call button ! … ya… it was small and located on one side of the table near the partition we were next to and guess what? When you press it a server magically appears! Ingenius! It just makes sense, as a server you don’t have to check unnecessarily on your table and as a patron you can ask for assistance when you want it… as they say in the guiness commercial.. BRILLIANT!

Vol de mort

..French Translation: Stealer of the dead. Not bad Rowling. I will admit I didn’t read all the books, I read the first and then saw a few movies and skipped right ahead to Deathly Hallows. I do that sometimes (see also: Dexter, season 1 episode 1 and then… all of season 7 in a day) Anyway for all the good and bad reviews arguing that the plot basis is that of any other fantasy story (Good vs. Evil.. etc etc.. oh and those who have actually compared it to Lord of the RIngs!) It is what it is, and for that it is well done. The books (um… what I did read ahaha) were legible and didn’t blather on (except for the camping scene apparently) and it got kids to read ! alot ! So good. I decided to do a small piece on our three main characters.. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson. We have basically watched them grow up (and continue to grow) on film. I couldn’t help but notice Rupert getting the man-boy body/awkwardness going on… its okay though, I think he is cute. Daniel Radcliffe has since become a sensation on Broadway (Take it off! kidding!) so that is all well and good and Emma Watson has grown up the pretty English girl that she is, modeling and attending school.. and also has lamented she can’t find a date (dearie, boys are dumb… And probably intimidated by your hotness and all your money, their loss!!)

Also here is an old review by Stephen King of Harry Potter. There are so many reviews with different view points but I decided a reputable author is what I would rather choose to include, enjoy: King me !

Also here is an interesting development (from 2010 ahaha), Scorsese talking Grint.. ?! The title hints at Grint being the new DiCaprio (having that hidden potential) Hmmm… Link up here———> oh boy oh, you like a Leo DiCapriooo oh

What do you think?

I think Grint has definitely grown up to be an unexpected total cutie but.. a new Leo? Can’t say I agree… if you read the article turns out all that Scorsese stuff was heresay, although Grint?!!?! CherryBomb?! Damn. You’ve gotten hot.

Here are some Daniel pictures.. I was too lazy/uninterested to get details on current projects.. google dammit ! hahaha

And of course Emma.. I included a Burberry video.. fitting for her, she is a classy lady…

LOVE this (& I want the coat)

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g05wPnvOt0Y]

Also link up to this website that is all things Emma.

And last but not least….

 AWwwWwwWw

Unlike so many others I don’t believe these three will never have problems being typecast (haven’t so far) Cheers!
